The Stimulus control, generalization & schedules glossary connects ABA terms that describe why responding changes across situations, how consequences are arranged, and whether learning extends beyond teaching. These concepts classify measured relations. Their names do not explain a person by themselves or prescribe a clinical plan. Good use requires observable definitions, meaningful comparisons, raw counts, context, history, and client-centered safeguards.

Motivation changes value and current responding

A motivating operation is an environmental event or condition that changes the current effectiveness of a consequence and changes behavior that has produced that consequence. An establishing operation increases those effects; an abolishing operation decreases them.

An unconditioned motivating operation has value-altering effects that do not depend on the learning history being analyzed. A conditioned motivating operation acquires its effects through learning history. Langthorne and McGill's tutorial explains the conventional framework and its application.

Motivation differs from availability. A preferred break may be valuable now, while a cue signals whether asking will produce it. Basic needs, communication, medical care, movement, and safety should never be withheld to manufacture motivation.

Stimulus control depends on differential relations

Stimulus control means responding varies reliably with antecedent stimuli because of a relevant history. A discriminative stimulus signals that a response has produced reinforcement under similar conditions. An S-delta signals that the response has not produced that reinforcement under the arranged conditions.

A simple discrimination involves differential responding across antecedent conditions. Stimulus discrimination is the observed differentiation. In a conditional discrimination, one stimulus changes which comparison or response is correct.

Matching to sample presents a sample and comparison array. The sample changes which comparison is selected. Identity matching uses physically matching sample and comparison stimuli. Arbitrary matching uses taught relations between stimuli that need not resemble each other.

Balance positions, materials, partners, and prompt histories. Correct selections can reflect unintended gaze, location, wording, or teacher cues rather than the planned relation.

Schedules describe consequence arrangements

A fixed-ratio schedule delivers reinforcement after a fixed response count. A variable-ratio schedule varies the required count around a stated distribution. A fixed-interval schedule makes the first eligible response after a fixed interval effective. A variable-interval schedule varies that interval.

A concurrent schedule makes two or more schedules available at the same time for different responses. A multiple schedule alternates schedule components with distinct signals. A mixed schedule alternates components without those component-specific signals. A chained schedule requires completing linked components in sequence, with each component associated with its own stimulus condition.

State the response unit, consequence, reset rule, signal, timing rule, and whether prompted responses qualify. Common textbook patterns are possibilities rather than guarantees for an individual.

Behavioral momentum refers to resistance to change relative to baseline under a disruption. Nevin and colleagues review the translational framework. Baseline response rate and persistence are distinct, and one disruption test does not establish a broad trait.

Choice requires relative measurement

The matching law describes relations between relative response allocation and relative obtained reinforcement across alternatives. Reed and Kaplan's practitioner tutorial discusses the model and its interpretation.

Measure responses or time at each option and the obtained consequences for each. Delay, quality, amount, effort, instructions, history, discriminability, and bias can affect allocation. One matching proportion cannot establish the law or show that reinforcement alone caused a choice.

Contingency-shaped behavior develops mainly through direct contact with consequences. Rule-governed behavior is influenced by verbal descriptions of contingencies. Real behavior can reflect both histories, and the distinction should be supported by evidence rather than inferred from fluency or age.

Equivalence requires specific tests

Stimulus equivalence refers to emergent relations that meet defined tests. Reflexivity is identity matching, symmetry is the emergence of a reversed relation, and transitivity is the emergence of a relation through shared trained links. An equivalence class is the set of stimuli shown to participate in those relations.

Sidman and Tailby's testing paradigm is foundational. Taught matching accuracy alone does not demonstrate equivalence. Use balanced, unprompted tests and report each relation with its own denominator.

Derived relational responding is responding to relations that were not directly trained and can include more than equivalence. Relational frame theory is a behavior-analytic account of learned relational responding and transformations of stimulus function. Critchfield and colleagues review derived stimulus relations in language and cognition. The theory and a teaching procedure are different things.

Generalization should be programmed and tested

Stimulus generalization occurs when responding extends to stimuli beyond those used in training. A generalization gradient displays responding across values along a stimulus dimension. Response generalization occurs when untrained responses serving a related function emerge.

Multiple exemplar training teaches across varied examples. Holth reviews its strengths and limitations. Variation can help, but more examples do not guarantee transfer.

Programming common stimuli places relevant features from everyday settings into teaching. General case analysis samples the range of relevant situations and responses a learner may encounter. An indiscriminable contingency makes it harder to predict exactly when reinforcement will occur, which may support persistence or transfer under some conditions.

Define what is novel before the probe. Separate prompted teaching, unprompted probes, maintenance, stimulus generalization, and response generalization.

A probe example

Rosa learns to identify three bus symbols with one instructor. Across 12 unprompted trials with trained symbols, she selects correctly on 10/12, 83.3%. With four novel symbol formats and a different instructor, she is correct on 5/8, 62.5%. Those denominators show acquisition and a generalization probe, rather than one combined mastery score.

The team asks Rosa which formats are easiest to see, varies relevant examples, preserves ordinary visual supports, and checks use at actual stops. The result can guide teaching without claiming a causal mechanism from two small samples.
